• Remove barriers to listening: step away from your phone and computer, and
eliminate any other distractions.
• Listen to what is being said (content) and why it is being said (intent).
• Try to understand what the speaker is saying, even if you don't agree.
• Speak only when necessary: to ask for clarification or to paraphrase what the
speaker has said.
Practice these two skills every day. It may feel awkward at first, but as with any other skill (learning to play a
musical instrument or a sport, for example), you'll get better with practice. And your efforts will be rewarded.
You'll be able to do just about anything that's required of you as a manager: express your thoughts, understand
what others are thinking, give and receive feedback, make direct requests, resolve conflict, and share ideas and
information. That's a lot!

This isn't about half-hearing or only pretending to
listen; it's about really listening to what the speaker
is saying.
