10 THINGS EVERY NEW MANAGER NEEDS TO KNOW Even if the rest of your organization borders on the dysfunctional, it doesn't mean your department has to be that way. Do everything you can to create an environment in which the people on your team are inspired to do their best. If you wait until the rest of your company catches up, you'll be waiting a very long time. So, even if your boss, other department heads or the senior team haven't yet adopted these best practices, you can take the lead. There are lots of things you can do that are in your direct control. In fact, all 10 things are in your control! 16 Work on your communication skills every day. Clarify roles and set expectations early on. Tackle the tough issues right away. Be consistent in your management style. Play to people's strengths. Get out of the way. Treat people as individuals. Work at being human. Check in with yourself to see how you're doing.
